NBA
2K11 was among the best sports games of last year, and one of the best ever
made. Can NBA 2K12 matchup? In a word, yes. Yet its four main modes of play,
from the time-capsule “NBA’s Greatest” to online multiplayer, range from
achievement to marginal improvement to inexcusable disappointment. That NBA
2K12 pulls — and deserves — rave reviews despite that mixed-bag performance
speaks of the critical importance of gameplay, physics and presentation in the
sports genre.
NBA
2K12 is a testament, in video game form, to America's love of professional
basketball. Perhaps more than any other sports video game*, 2K Sports' latest
offering shows a respect and love for its source material that most other
titles do not match.
And
given the labor troubles afflicting the NBA this season, NBA 2K12 may be the
only way basketball fans will be able to enjoy the professional game for a long
time. That makes it a little harder to decide if NBA 2K12 is a "must
buy" for the fan and his or her hard-earned $60.
What are the Game modes in
NBA 2012?
Game
Modes include My Player, Association (Franchise Mode), NBA’s Greatest, Creating
a Legend, online mode. Association mode does a great job of letting you be in
control of the team, and playing a full season. Online is where most of my time
is played, although I am not the best at the game. I like playing against an
actually player, it makes the game less receptive for me and more competitive.
Although it is not too competitive whenever single player I face is up by 10
points. I tend to get in a repetitive playing style; I need an online player to
force me to do something else. The defense is also a little tighter, and it is
fun to stick with your man, even when they don’t have the ball. Applying
pressure away from the ball handler can make a huge difference, and while
someone like Carmelo Anthony may still put up crazy numbers, shutting down his
teammates can make for an easy win. On top of that, the ability to run
defensive plays is easier than ever, but you would expect that with a new
version of an annual release.
Online
play appears to be where this game hits a snag. Aside from the NBA lockout
preventing players from having access to new rosters, there are many reports of
gamers having difficulty with the online experience. All I can say for now is
that the last time I tried to connect to an online match, the game spent
several minutes looking for a connection, but not ultimately finding one. If
it's any consolation for online players, 2K Sports has decided to keep NBA
2K11's servers operating longer than initially planned.
As
you progress you can then buy new moves, different shot animations, new skill
points and a handful of other upgrades. You can even throw parties for your
team or help out in the community to increase your teammate’s respect, or gain
local fan support.
What are overall statistics
of NBA 2012?
Playing
NBA 2K12 might be the only way for my Suns to win a championship this year,
sorry Steve. We are lucky that there is even a season this year; I am way over
the lockout. But check out NBA 2k12, it is a great game and is hours of fun.
Well worth picking up. I got mine for PS3; I’ll see you online, where you will probably
beat me. If not for the issues detracting from online play - not all of which
are the game's fault - this reviewer would be happy to give NBA 2K12 a solid
recommendation. As it is, NBA 2K12 has excellent single-player features and is
clearly made by and for people who love professional basketball. But for
online-oriented gamers, the title may not be worth a full $60 investment. Those
who find themselves among that number may be better served by waiting for a
price decrease and more patching. Even without
the NBA Greatest, which has become the focal point of the marketing campaign,
this game would still be amazing. The lockout is going to hurt this game a bit,
but it may also be an answer to fans that are desperate for some pro b-ball.
It’s a shame that legal wrangling and things that have nothing to do with the
game could hurt it, and you can’t hold it against 2K Sports, but it is what it
is.
